2. Purchase
Based on your budget and requirements, Starhunter can source a brand-new or carefully selected pre-owned camera. Detailed photos or videos will be provided for your approval before purchase.
3. Pre-Check
Upon arrival at the DreamSky workshop, the camera undergoes a comprehensive inspection and functionality check. Modification will only proceed after the camera is confirmed to be in proper working condition. Should any issues be identified, we will promptly arrange a return, replacement, or coordinate with the supplier for resolution.
4. Astro Modification
DreamSky’s experienced technicians will perform the modification according to your selected package, including filter installation, optical cleaning, flange distance calibration, and comprehensive functionality testing. Throughout the process, progress updates will be provided via the Starhunter system, keeping you informed every step of the way.
5.Ship Back
Once the modification is complete, the camera will be carefully packed and shipped via international courier, with a tracking number provided for shipment monitoring. Due to transportation, customs clearance, and import procedures, the typical turnaround time is approximately 30–45 days from the date the camera is received.
6. Collection
Upon arrival, the Starhunter support team will contact you to arrange collection and inspection. The camera will be checked to ensure the modification quality, focusing accuracy, and overall functionality meet our standards before final handover.

Upon arrival at the DreamSky workshop, your camera will undergo a comprehensive inspection and functionality check. Modification will only proceed once the camera is confirmed to be in proper working condition. Should any issues be identified, we will contact you promptly for further consultation.
4. Astro Modification
DreamSky’s experienced technicians will perform the modification according to your selected package, including filter installation, optical cleaning, flange distance calibration, and comprehensive functionality testing. 5. Ship Back

Warranty & After-Sales Service Terms:
a. 30-Day Full Device Warranty
After modification, the camera is covered by a 30-day full device warranty, which includes software and hardware issues caused by the modification process, as well as related part replacements.
b. Lifetime After Sales Support
All astrophotography modification-related issues are covered by lifetime free after-sales support, including BCF filter detachment, sensor dust contamination, flange distance shift, and focus calibration issues.
c. Exclusions
Damage caused by human error, accidental impact, improper use, or failures unrelated to the modification is not covered under the free warranty. DreamSky can assist with inspection and repair services, with only reasonable service fees applied where necessary.
d. Camera Restoration Service
Modified cameras can be restored to their original factory configuration upon request. As the restoration process is more complex and time-consuming than the modification itself, a corresponding service fee will apply. For detailed pricing, please consult the Starhunter support team.
e. Pre-Modification Inspection Notice
All cameras undergo a full inspection and acceptance check before entering the modification process. If any abnormalities, malfunctions, or signs of previous improper modification are detected, DreamSky reserves the right to decline the service and return the camera. In such cases, all shipping costs to and from our facility will be borne by the customer.
FAQ 1: Do I need a modified camera for astrophotography?
Not necessarily for basic nightscape photography such as the Milky Way or star trails. However, for deep-sky targets like nebulae, a modified camera is almost essential. Without modification, you would need significantly longer exposure times—often several times more—and may still struggle to achieve the same level of detail and signal strength.
FAQ 2: Can a modified camera still be used for everyday photography?
Yes. Astrophotography modification only involves changing the BCF filter, so general shooting is still fully possible. However, it will not support true factory preset white balance. Since the camera captures more red-spectrum signal after modification, images will appear warmer or reddish and require custom white balance adjustments. While it may not fully match original color accuracy, it is still suitable for everyday use. For simplicity, many users prefer to dedicate the modified camera for astrophotography and keep a stock camera for normal photography. Alternatively, some users use a front-mounted Daily Pro filter to approximate the stock camera.
FAQ 3: Which camera models are suitable for modification?
Based on our experience, we recommend choosing high value-for-money camera models. Nikon D750, D810, Z5, and Z6 are among the best options, featuring sensors such as Sony IMX071, IMX128, and IMX094. Models like the D800, D800E, D810, and D810A share the same sensor architecture, but standard versions are significantly more affordable, while autofocus performance is less critical for astrophotography.Canon cameras are generally less recommended due to differences in CMOS dynamic range performance, which may limit astrophotography results compared to other systems.
FAQ 4: If there are dedicated astrophotography cameras, why still modify a camera?
Dedicated astrophotography cameras are extremely expensive and often difficult to obtain. For example, the Nikon D810A can cost around RM14,000+, while a used D800 with the same sensor can be around RM1,800, making the price difference very significant.
In addition, factory astrophotography models are designed to balance everyday photography and astrophotography, which means their H-alpha transmission is not as high as a dedicated modification. For this reason, camera modification is often a more cost-effective and performance-focused solution for deep-sky imaging.
FAQ 5: Can a modified camera be restored to its original state?
No, modification is not permanent. It mainly involves replacing the original filter. If needed, the original filter can be reinstalled to restore the camera to its factory configuration.
FAQ 6: Which type of modification is best?
For beginners, BCF modification is generally the best choice due to its excellent balance of performance and cost. For users who require stronger light pollution suppression, an LPro filter modification can also be considered.
