StarFocus Bahtinov Mask

Precision Star Focusing with a Bahtinov Mask

Attach the focusing mask and switch your camera to Live View mode. For easier visibility of the diffraction pattern, use the lens at its widest aperture, set the ISO to 1600 or higher, and use an exposure time of 10 seconds or longer. Frame a bright star or distant point light source near the center of the screen, then zoom in to the maximum Live View magnification.

Slowly adjust the focus ring until three diffraction spikes become visible. Continue fine-tuning the focus until the central spike is positioned exactly between the other two spikes. When all three spikes appear perfectly symmetrical, precise focus has been achieved.

Remove the focusing mask and begin imaging to capture the sharpest possible stars.

Key Tips

  1. Ensure the bright star or distant point light used for focusing is positioned at the center of the camera screen.
  2. For best results, use a target brighter than magnitude 1. Brighter stars produce clearer diffraction spikes, making precise focusing easier. Dim targets may not generate visible spikes in Live View, reducing focusing accuracy.

Handheld Focusing Mask Instructions

  1. Complete your camera settings and set the lens to its widest aperture. Some lenses may experience focus shift when stopped down, so it is recommended to focus using the same aperture intended for imaging.
  2. Adjust your composition so that a bright star or distant point light source is centered in the frame.
  3. Hold the focusing mask gently with your thumb and index finger, resting your hand lightly against the lens hood for stability. Keep the mask centered on the optical axis of the lens and avoid excessive misalignment.
  4. Zoom in to the maximum Live View magnification. Three diffraction spikes should become visible.
  5. Slowly adjust the focus ring until the central diffraction spike is positioned exactly between the other two crossing spikes.
  6. When all three diffraction spikes appear perfectly symmetrical, precise focus has been achieved. Remove the focusing mask and begin your imaging session.

Focusing Guide

When the central diffraction spike is perfectly centered between the two outer spikes, the lens has reached optimal focus, delivering the sharpest possible star images.

Daily Pro White Balance Correction

The DreamSky Daily Pro Filter is specially designed for modified astrophotography cameras to correct the red color cast that may occur in everyday shooting after modification. With a spectral response close to that of a factory camera, it effectively restores natural color reproduction and supports accurate auto white balance, delivering a near-original shooting experience for daily photography.

After installing the Daily Pro Filter, the camera is not only fully capable of deep-sky and nightscape imaging, but also handles landscapes, portraits, and everyday photography with ease—truly enabling a “daytime photography, nighttime astrophotography” dual-purpose solution that combines creative flexibility with practical usability.

When to Use the Daily Pro Filter

f your modified camera is used not only for astrophotography, but also for landscapes, portraits, travel, and everyday photography, the Daily Pro Filter is the ideal companion. It helps restore natural, accurate colors and improves white balance performance, delivering a shooting experience that closely resembles that of an unmodified camera.

What Changes After an Astromod Camera?

After astromod, the camera's transmission of red emission lines such as H-alpha (656.3nm) and SII is significantly increased, allowing it to capture substantially more nebula signal. However, this enhanced red sensitivity can cause images to appear warmer or exhibit color imbalance in everyday photography, affecting overall color accuracy.

The Daily Pro Filter is designed to correct this color shift, restoring more natural color reproduction and enabling the camera to perform equally well for both astrophotography and everyday shooting.

Why Choose the Daily Pro Filter?

The DreamSky Daily Pro Filter was specifically developed for astromodified cameras to address the common issue of red color cast and color imbalance in everyday photography. It allows photographers to enjoy the enhanced astrophotography capabilities of a modified camera without compromising its usability for daily shooting.

To achieve color reproduction as close as possible to a stock camera, DreamSky invested over a year in research and development, including extensive field testing and six rounds of spectral curve optimization. Each iteration was carefully compared and calibrated against original factory filters to deliver natural color rendition and a shooting experience that closely matches the factory camera.

Canon R LPro Astro Filter

The Optolong L-Pro (L-Professional) is a broadband light pollution suppression filter designed for deep-sky astrophotography. It selectively reduces common artificial light pollution and skyglow while maintaining high transmission of key nebula emission lines, including H-alpha, OIII, H-beta, NII, and SII. This helps improve image contrast, darken the sky background, and preserve important deep-sky details.

With its excellent light pollution suppression and broad spectral transmission, the L-Pro enhances contrast and detail in nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters. It is particularly effective for astrophotography and visual observation under moderate to heavy light-polluted skies, making it one of the most popular all-purpose filters for deep-sky imaging.

Ideal for Visual Observation & Astrophotography

The L-Pro is a versatile broadband light pollution filter designed for both visual observation and astrophotography. Its high transmission of continuous-spectrum light makes it especially suitable for imaging galaxies, reflection nebulae, and star clusters, while effectively reducing the impact of urban light pollution.

For visual observation, the L-Pro helps darken the sky background and improve contrast between deep-sky objects and the night sky. It also features a built-in IR-cut function, allowing direct use with CCD and CMOS cameras for luminance imaging without requiring an additional infrared-blocking filter.

It is important to note that light pollution filters do not increase the brightness of celestial objects. Instead, they enhance visibility by reducing skyglow and artificial light pollution, improving contrast and revealing finer details in deep-sky targets.

Important Safety Warning

Optolong filters are not designed for solar observation. Never use this filter to observe or photograph the Sun directly. Improper use may result in permanent eye damage or blindness. Always use a certified solar filter specifically designed for safe solar observation and imaging.
